Academic Advising

Mission: Academic Advising at Mount Wachusett Community College collaborates with students to incorporate their unique and diverse backgrounds and goals into personalized academic, career and transfer plans.

Vision: Academic Advising aspires to partner with our diverse student body to cultivate opportunities for students to thrive by providing resources that foster learning, persistence and achievement.

Academic Advising- Students are assigned faculty or professional staff academic advisors based on their academic program. Advisors assist students with:

  • Selecting classes to meet program requirements
  • Reviewing academic programs and opportunities
  • Explaining college policies and procedures
  • Connecting with support services and resources
  • Navigating challenges or obstacles that could impact education progress

Students are encouraged to connect with their advisor at least three times a semester to review academic progress. Students should also consult an advisor whenever they are making changes to their schedule or academic plan or whenever they have questions.

Faculty and professional advisors are here to support students. While advisors are here to guide students in their journey, students are the one who will make many of the decisions that impact their success.

Career Advising- Career Services are available to all MWCC students and alumni. Career Services provides guidance on all aspects of career planning and placement. Career exploration and selecting an appropriate major for career goals is an important step for college students throughout their time at MWCC. Career assessment tools and individual career coaching help students determine the best academic major for their intended career path. Career Services assists new and continuing students in all phases of their career search.  In addition to career assessment and coaching, services include but are not limited to job search assistance, resume writing workshops, career fairs, and connecting students to job opportunities in person and via Handshake.

Transfer Advising- Transfer counseling provides students who are interested in exploring transfer options to four-year colleges or universities. Through transfer counseling, students also learn about opportunities such as MassTransfer, MassGuarantee and Commonwealth Commitment. Transfer counselors assist students with exploring degrees and certificates available at MWCC with courses that will transfer to four-year programs.

There are several advising resources on campus. Here are a few:

The Office of Advising, Career & Transfer is MWCC’s central advising hub. Here, advisors support all MWCC students in navigating all aspects of being a student, from registering for classes and discussing majors to navigating obstacles and connecting with resources.

The SUCCESS Scholar Program works with first year college students from a variety of backgrounds. Resources include bi-weekly meetings with a SUCCESS counselor, connecting with a peer mentor, attending events and activities and building connections with staff and students.

The THRIVE Center supports students who may have experienced challenges and need additional assistance. Students who find themselves on academic or financial aid warning or suspension will work with a THRIVE counselor to build a plan, connect with resources and get back on track on the journey towards achieving their goals.
